The Father Of Invention

The skin irritations that came with hard water washing eventually led John to the development of the OhSoft portable water softener. But let's hear "The 60-Year Itch" story directly from the man himself:

From my early teens, c.1950, I've been bothered with skin irritations. Most deodorants cause a serious itch, my skin peels and my armpits develop a nasty rash.

It was my secret. I didn't tell anyone. I gently bathed and rinsed, applied soothing creams (that frequently inflamed the problem) and searched for non-irritating products. Over the years I tried numerous skin cream/deodorant combinations but my skin issues continued.

In 1959, my beautiful bride suggested Dessert Flower, a small white jar of gentle deodorant for women. What a relief! My underarm problem was controlled. I could then turn my attention to skin irritations elsewhere on my body. (scalp, crotch, shins, etc.)

In 1967, my soothing Dessert Flower disappeared from the market. I extended my supply with a few jars found in surrounding towns but my written appeal to the manufacturer was unanswered.

In January 2000, before Cathy and I moved into our Streetsville home, we invested $8,000 in replacement utilities, including a new hot water tank, piping and a whole house water conditioning system. (municipal water for gardening, reverse osmosis water for the kitchen and soft water for the baths and laundry). We both loved showering and bathing with soft water but the link between soft water and skin irritations didn't occur to me until after we sold our Streetsville home.

When we moved here, to an apartment in Burlington, we were limited to hard, municipal, bathing water. All my skin problems returned. By year end, 2008, I knew that my skin irritation was linked to hard water. I searched desperately for a solution. When none was available, I made it my mission to produce a practical source of soft bathing water for myself and for others.

It is only in the last short while that I discovered a daughter and a brother who are privately plagued by sensitive skin. I now realize that many, if not most of us, are adversely affected by the bi-product of soaps, shampoos and hard water. SOAP SCUM!
